Shared Note: - John may have been born 26 Dec 1850 instead. John was the first of the

family to come to America. He was induced to come by a friend who had previously located in Winona, MN.
After John came he was joined by his father, Mathias, and also by his brothers,
Peter, John B., and Nicholas, and his sisters, Lizzie and Susan.
John worked about for a while, and then, after saving a little money, he
secured 160 acres in section twenty-four, Whitewater township. This was all
wild land, with no buildings thereon. He put up a small frame house, and
started in farming on his own responsibility. By frugal care and hard work he
increased his holdings, until he owned 320 acres of rich land in Whitewater
township and 160 acres in Norton township.
