Notes for James Patterson: Ref Savage: James came probably in the sad freight list of the John and Sarah from London, November 1651, and if so, he is one of only four or five that prospered here, among the great crowd of romantic young followers in Scotland of Charles II, who in the bloody days of 3 September of the successive years 1650 and 1651, were captured on the fields of Cromwell's glory at Dunbar and Worcester, and transported to the colonies to be sold in the shambles like other cattle, of whom the cargoes to Boston would amount to as many hundreds. He was of B. perhaps carr. by his owner 1659, freeman 1690. He served in the great war with the Indians 1675, and with other soldiers, when his merits were duly considered near sixty years after was rewarded with a grant of land Narraganset, No. 6, and his grandson drew the proper share. Ref. NEGHR: Among the adherents of Charles II in the Scottish army, defeated at the battle of Worcester by Oliver Cromwell, and transported to New England to be sold as slaves or servants for a term of years, is found the name of James Patterson. The prisoners sailed from London in the ship "John & Sarah," about November 11, 1651, and arrived at Charlestown before May 1652. (Register, i. pp.377+380; Brown's Hist. of the Highland Clans, vol. ii, p. 61.) In 1658, James Patterson, supposed to be the Scotch prisoner, received a grant of land from the town of Billerica, and between that date and 1685 he received sixteen different grants of land; and in 1661 his name appears on the town records in a vote of the Proprietors of the township. He was admitted freeman April 18, 1690. During Philip's war Oct. 8, 1675, his house was appointed for garrison, and the garrison consisted of himself, John Baldwin, Edward and Thomas Farmer, Henry and John Jeffts, and two soldiers. For servies in the was his son James with descendants of other soldiers, was rewarded by a grant of land in Naraansett No. 6 (now Templeton). He was also in the Canadian Expedition of 1690, and his son James, by virtue of his father's servies, was a proprietor in the Sudbury Canada grant of 1741, located in Maine, and comprising the present towns of Jay and Canton.
