Gene Gregory Staloch, age 83, of Eyota, died Friday, June 17, at Arbor Gardens in Eyota. Born Nov. 23, 1927, in Eyota, to Daniel and Nora (Krenske) Staloch. He attended Eyota High School. In 1945 Gene joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater, being discharged in 1947. On Oct. 15, 1949, he married Ann Dolney in Decorah, Iowa. They have lived there entire married life in Eyota. Gene worked in the trucking business from 1947-1965, then went to work for the city of Eyota, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota, where he had served on the church council. He had been a 45-year member of the Eyota Volunteer Fire Department. He had served on the Eyota city council for 8 years, the Eyota city park board, and was a member of the Eyota ambulance service when it first started. He was a member of the Eyota American Legion, had served twice as commander and was on the honor guard for 30 years. He was a youth firearms safety instructor for many years. Gene was an avid gardener and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Ann of Eyota; children, Deborah (Rod) Hofschulte of Omaha, Neb., Sharon (David) Behrens and Jayne (Jeff) Behrens, both of Elba, Joan (Ross) Flury of Dover, and Gregory (Deb) Staloch of Eyota; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Roger of Eyota, Roland (Carol) of Rochester and Daniel of Arkansas; 3 sisters, Jeanette Ross of Plainview, Rita Alvarez of Ocean Side, California, and Mary Catherine (Dean) Nesbitt of Pine Island. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, 1 great-grandchild, 2 brothers and 1 sister. The funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 22, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eyota, with Father Kurt Farrell officiating. Burial will be at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
