Obituary for Olive Hanson

Olive A. Hanson, age 90, of Canby, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby with Father Craig Timmerman as celebrant. Visitation will be Friday prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Birk Funeral Home in Canby with procession to the church following. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Canby. Olive Ann Winkels Hanson was born on May 7, 1922. She was the baby of a family of 11 … she grew up on a dairy farm just south of Canby … with her father Frank and her mother Barbara … who died when Ollie was a girl. Ollie was doted on by her eight sisters and two brothers … she was their little doll. She always sought independence … leaving home to go to secretarial school, city commercial college in Des Moines. Then came World War II --- Ollie moved to San Francisco to join her girlfriends who were now in the women's military corp … she was a legal secretary on a naval base. When the war ended she moved back to Minneapolis, coming to Canby on weekends to visit her family. Her beloved brother Spike took her to a dance at the fairgrounds one Saturday night and introduced her to Randy Hanson. She says they danced the night away and fell in love. Randy and Ollie had three children, Jane, Steve and Todd. Always working, the pair realized Randy's dream of opening a restaurant in the early 60s. They were partners, he was the chef, she made her renowned caramel rolls and delicious pies, and ran the place. Randy died in 1990, and Ollie began traveling the world with one of her nieces Dorothy. Then she was diagnosed with Alzheimers, and began the long journey towards the twilight of her life. She was always witty, clever and joyful, even when she couldn't recognize her own children. They were the pride of her life, as were her grandchildren, siblings, her in-laws, her many Godchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends. She loved life, and lived it with dignity and grace. Grateful for having shared her life are her three children, Jane Hanson-Foreman (Michael) of New York, NY, Steven (Diane) Hanson of Dassel, MN, Todd Hanson of Bloomington, MN; three grandchildren, Eric (Bridget) Hanson of Plymouth, MN, Katie Hanson of Wayzata, MN, Alexandra Foreman of New York, NY; great-grandson, Caleb Hanson; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Hegg, Marlys Streff, Ruth Winkels; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randy Hanson; parents, Frank and Barbara Winkels; siblings, Regina Mitchell, Dorothy Christopherson, Isabelle Winkels, Engelberta Dunlap, Leona Hansen, Rose Olson, Alvina Jones, Walter Winkels, Lorraine King and Spike Winkels. Blessed be her memory.
